BUSH CLAIM: "Astronauts knew the dangers and they faced them willingly, knowing they had a high and noble purpose in life." Did Bush forget to mention that he slashed funding to NASA just a year ago? Specifically: The Space Shuttle Program

CNN story, February 5, 2002:
"The space shuttle program, which Bush administration budget documents scold for inefficient safety upgrades, would receive about $65 million less than its $3.3 billion last year."
So, let me get this straight: Bush scolds the program for poor safety upgrades, then cuts their budget.

One Year Ago: Bush Cuts NASA Funding in Favor of 'Arming Space'
Incidentally, today, Senator Patty Murray said she "hoped" we would continue funding NASA. Why didn't she just point out the truth? That the funding was already cut. And it was Bush's idea. Tragic as this story is, Democrats must use every opportunity to point out when this Republican administration makes a mistake. Will they be criticized for it? Will they be told, "Now's not the time. The nation is grieving." Of course. But, they'll be criticized anyway. WHEN is the right time to expose the shortcomings of the administration? Why not just take the gloves off and go for the throat whenever possible to show that, on George Bush's list of priorities, human life is at the bottom.

Yeah, like the last time, except remember, the French had some of their own photos that dismantled our little con-job.**UPDATE: McDermott had to cancel unexpectedly. Will reschedule for next week, actually a better time so we can talk after Powell delivers his report to the UN

Plus, it looks like Hans Blix thinks there's still no reason to do anything but continue inspections.
Honestly, why didn't the U.S. just share the information with the U.N. if our intentions are to get to the truth?

11pm - Why does everyone think Christopher Hitchens has it down regarding the Iraq conflict? I could deconstruct his argument AND bake really fancy cookies at the same time! And what's goin' on with these former lefties? Did they get mugged?

Midnight - God (or Mother Nature or Mr. Nobody) only knows. By midnight, I've completely lost control of the show and the janitor is telling me what to do. But we have a story on sex offenders, so that's always a good time! Story one: Guy is released. Loses job because his employer might get bad publicity. Is THAT fair?

Story two: Guy gets released and is CHAUFERRED (sp?) to work to protect him from the wrath of the community? Somebody's gotta make sense out of all this. It better be you calling in, because my solution is to legalize gay marriage, get 'em hitched and let the employed one bring home the bacon (so to speak). The other guy can stay at home, eat bon bons and watch the soaps just like in real life.

Now, this is NOT to say, other things won't come up and totally change our plans. I have some great stuff on the influence of the internet on our collective knowledge base, more trouble in Afghanistan, a final comment on the Bug Chasers Lie and how a CHURCH was used instead of the courthouse to try a drunk driving case here in Seattle. (Thanks to Mary S. for that one.)

Monday Night's Show has lots in store.:

First, controversial Chief UN Weapons Inspector SCOTT RITTER joins the show at 10:15 (PST) to discuss the recent smear campaign and his observations on what's next for the middle east.

Help us prepare Bush's State of the Union Speech. Just imagine if the teleprompter breaks down! I think we're looking at some record-breaking Nielsons in that case.

Also, is the U.S. ready to launch a genocidal attack on Iraq or giving the inspectors a chance? There have been so many mixed messages this weekend, it's hard to know what the next move will be. Is the hint of a few more weeks for inspections just more rationale for a February war or is there really an attempt to avoid it?

Later this week: Mark Crispin Miller, author of The Bush Dyslexicon, helps us make sense (?) out of the State of the Union address. Rep. Jim McDermott, in studio, comments on the speech Tuesday and the most blatant abuse so far of Bush's Faith Based Initiative. Existing social service Funds, set aside for current food programs, low income housing and medical care are now slashed and diverted to fund the construction of CHURCHES! Please, indulge me.
